Alleged threat at Hopewell High

Last evening, we were alerted to an alleged threat shared on social media regarding Hopewell High School. We immediately began collaboration with the Hopewell Police Department developing a plan to formally investigate and increase a strong law enforcement presence in the school during this process. As of 11:30 a.m., we have completed our investigation and have just debriefed with the Hopewell Chief of Police. We are extremely relieved and grateful to our partners in local law enforcement who helped us initiate this investigation quickly and bring it to a successful close. As a result, we have determined no valid threat to Hopewell High School. Two students of interest were immediately identified, questioned and disciplined. Results of the investigation suggest the two students were involved in a verbal altercation while playing a video game throughout the weekend. This communication continued into Monday morning at HHS. Comments were overheard by nearby classmates and construed as potential threats to the school. These comments were then shared on social media. In collaboration with the Hopewell Police Department, these threats were dispelled and unfounded. Based upon our collaborative work between school officials and the police, it was determined that the school is safe today and will be tomorrow. An added police presence will remain at HHS to ease the fears of students, staff and parents for the time being. An all-call telephone message to this effect was sent to parents at 12:40 today.
