Carter G. Woodson Middle School was the math hub of Hopewell earlier this week as they hosted 150 students in the school systems annual Challenge 24 competition. Challenge 24 is mental math game where students use skills in multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction to create combinations of twenty four. You score points by solving the flash card problems quicker than the three other players at your table.
“I get to develop my math skills, and I get to have fun too,” explained sixth grader Nathan Horton. “Math has been my favorite subject ever since I started school.”
“I have been practicing everyday at home on the internet,” said Mindee Rexroad. The extra effort paid off as Mindee took home first place honors against her sixth-grade peers.
The City’s elementary schools also brought their best and brightest young mathematicians to compete as well. “We have fourth through eighth grades all here competing at-grade level,” said middle school math specialist and event organizer Rosemarie Bland. “We have been doing this (competition) for 16 years now. I love it and look forward to it every year.”
