The Hopewell City Public School Board met on Thursday July 19th for the first regularly scheduled board meeting of the 2012-2013 school year.

The School Board approved the hiring of two new administrators to our division. Mr. Jeff Bourman will be an Assistant Principal at Carter G. Woodson Middle School and Mr. Patrick Barnes is Hopewell City Public Schools' new Division Manager of Food Services. Mr. Barnes most recently served as the Food Service Coordinator for Surry County Public Schools. They will both be taking up their new positions starting August 1st.

Other highlights of the regular meeting included a presentation by the Principal of Woodlawn Learning Center, Mrs. Belinda Piercy, on Head Start Readiness and PALS assessment data.

The board was also very interested in a presentation by Dr. Kim Evans, our Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, and Mrs. Paula Brumfield, the division’s Supervisor of Federal Programs and Compensatory Education, about virtual-learning programs for our students. These programs offer distance learning and instruction on a wide range of topics that traditionally have not been available in high schools. Dr. Fahey expressed his enthusiasm on allowing students to be part of the selection process.

The school board also passed several resolutions, including one that will move the class of 2013’s graduation to Saturday morning. The date for this year’s ceremony will be June 8th.

Plan to attend our next normally scheduled meeting on Thursday, August 9th. The early session will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by the regular session at 7:30 p.m. These meetings are the very best way for you to learn about what is happening in the Hopewell City Public Schools.
