Eurika Tyree - New Hope Academy - Teacher of the Year 2016
Tyree made history as New Hope Academy’s first teacher of the year, as this school year closes out the first year of New Hope Academy. Tyree is a career and technical education teacher at New Hope and is described as “a rising star within the division.”
Keith Crews, Supervisor at New Hope Academy, praised Tyree for her years of experience she brought to New Hope, such as her current and second, term on the Cumberland County School Board, a guidance secretary, division testing coordinator, and bus driver, to name a few, he laughs.
It is not her many job titles that impress Crews and the staff at New Hope but rather her wealth of knowledge and her dedication to the students. He said she can be found picking up trash with the students as they work with Keep Hopewell Beautiful, collecting cans for their canned food drive, and making sure the students find gainful employment as she runs, and also initiated, the “Jobs for Virginia Graduates” program at New Hope; Crews added Tyree has taken students to interviews, helped them write cover letters, resumes, and dress for success. That success for her students starts in the classroom as her classroom lessons are “highly engaging” and involve learning real world skills, necessary to being productive citizens and finding gainful employment. Those lesson have been proven a success as Tyree has helped 12 students at New Hope find employment.
“She puts her best foot forward everyday when comes in,” he said. “This individual comes into the building giving of herself, her heart. She’s heartfelt, she is willing to give of herself each and everyday when she comes in…she is there to support the team.”
