HOPEWELL’S ON-TIME GRADUATION RATE INCORRECTLY REPORTED AS THE LOWEST IN VIRGINIA

HOPEWELL’S ON-TIME GRADUATION RATE INCORRECTLY REPORTED AS THE LOWEST IN VIRGINIA

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Due to an error in reporting, Hopewell City Public Schools on-time graduation rate was incorrectly reported as the lowest in Virginia for the class of 2021.  However, after the reporting mistake was corrected, Hopewell’s on-time graduation rate improved to 85% for the cohort of students who entered ninth grade four years ago and graduated from Hopewell High School this year.  The 85% on-time graduation rate is a 5% increase compared to the graduation rate for the class of 2020.  Both graduating classes endured significant learning disruptions as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and are to be commended for their ability to earn a high school diploma during such difficult circumstances.

Hopewell City Public Schools has developed a comprehensive & targeted plan for continuing to improve the on-time graduation rate for current and future students.  This plan includes but is not limited to the following steps:

1)      A team of high school educators has already started contacting parents of students who are struggling with attendance to offer tiers of support.

2)      School personnel will also attempt to reach out to every student &/or parents of students who has dropped out of Hopewell High School during the 2021-2022 school year to offer the following options:

  1. a)     Return to in-person learning.
  2. b)     Return to school through virtual instruction through Hopewell City Public Schools.
  3. c)       Return to school through virtual instruction outside of Hopewell City Public Schools.
  4. d)     Consider pursuing the GED.
  5. e)     Consider pursuing alternative education routes, such as Job Corps.

Hopewell City Public Schools, Imagineers of Excellence, in partnership with the community, will inspire students to achieve personal success and purpose, igniting in them a passion to change our world!
