English Learner (EL) Program Services

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program in Hopewell City Public Schools is designed to provide English language education with grade-appropriate content area instruction.  Taught by ESL endorsed teachers, English Language Learners (ELLs) gain proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. They learn vocabulary for social and instructional language and the languages of language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. In addition, their goals for vocabulary acquisition include tiered vocabulary from all elective and resource classes. Classroom teachers work with the ESL teachers to ensure students have differentiated instruction and are actively engaged.

The goals of ESL instruction support each student’s need to become proficient in English.

  • Students will increase their vocabulary.
  • Students will improve their reading comprehension.
  • Students will strengthen writing skills.
  • Students will demonstrate progress in speaking and listening skills.

The ESL curriculum and instruction is in alignment with the Standards of Learning in Virginia.

In addition, Hopewell City Public Schools incorporates the World Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) English Language Development (ELD) standards.
