24/7 Tobacco Free Campaign

MEDIA ADVISORY: Virginia Students Thank Their School Divisions For
Commitment to Tobacco- and E-Cigarette-Free Schools
60 Schools in 27 Virginia School Divisions Celebrate Tobacco-Free Spirit Day

WHAT: On February 14, 2018, join the 24/7 campaign, Y Street and the Virginia
Foundation for Healthy Youth in celebrating Virginia school divisions with
100% comprehensive tobacco- and e-cigarette-free policies. While all
school divisions in Virginia have policies prohibiting tobacco use, only 34
school divisions in Virginia currently have 100% comprehensive policies that
prohibit the use, possession, and distribution of tobacco products, including
e-cigarettes, by anyone, anytime, anywhere on school property or at school
events, including those that are off-site.

Chesterfield County Public Schools, Caroline County Public Schools,
Cumberland County Public Schools, Harrisonburg City Public Schools, Henrico
County Public Schools, Hopewell City Public Schools, Powhatan County Public
Schools, Richmond City Public Schools and Rockingham County Public
Schools are proud to be part of the thirty-four. In these 9 divisions, more than
167,000 students are protected from tobacco and e-cigarettes by this policy.

WHO: Students across Virginia will lead school-based events for Tobacco-Free
Spirit Day to celebrate their tobacco- and e-cigarette-free pride while raising
awareness of their division’s comprehensive policy.
Tobacco-Free Spirit Day is part of the 24/7 campaign, an initiative of Y Street,
the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth’s award-winning high school
volunteer program promoting a healthy Virginia. The 24/7 campaign partners
with divisions across the state to adopt, implement and enforce 100%
tobacco- and e-cigarette- free school policies.
Invited: Superintendents and School Board members in Chesterfield,
Cumberland, and Caroline counties, see below for event times and locations.

WHY: Schools are places where youth learn inside and outside the classroom.
While all school divisions in Virginia have a policy prohibiting tobacco use, only
34 out of 132 Virginia school divisions have 100% comprehensive
tobacco- and e-cigarette free policies. Tobacco-Free Spirit Day is a chance
for students and school communities to thank their divisions for their
commitment to 100% tobacco-free schools. School divisions like
Chesterfield County, Caroline County, Cumberland County, Harrisonburg
City, Henrico County, Hopewell City, Powhatan County, Richmond City
and Rockingham County are are sending a powerful message that
tobacco and e-cigarettes have no place in the school environment.
