Career and Technical Education

Career and Technical Education (CTE) students explore their career interests while gaining valuable knowledge and skills that prepare them for their career and post-secondary studies, employment, or enlistment. CTE enrolled on CTE programs can:

Earn diploma seals, scholarships, and recognized industry credentials, and
Participate in work-based learning experiences
Career technical student organizations
Dual enrollment at Richard Bland College, and
Concurrent programs at Brightpoint Community College

WORK-BASED LEARNING (WBL)

High-quality Work-Based Learning (WBL) comprises school-coordinated workplace experiences related to students' career goals and/or interests, integrated with instruction, and performed in partnership with local businesses and organizations.WBL experiences reinforce Virginia’s 5 C’s—critical thinking, collaboration, communication, creative thinking, and citizenship—by allowing students to apply these skills in a real-world business or service-oriented work environment.

Business and Community Partners

At the state level, the CTE curriculum is developed by education, business, and industry specialists to ensure students have the requisite skills to enter the workforce. The Career Education Consortium connects the regional workforce with K-12 schools and supports the preparation for in-demand careers. Local business and community partners advise our programs and support exploration of local career opportunities by hosting field trips, job-shadowing experiences, internships, and participating in career fairs, making presentations, teaching classes, and much more. Availability of Postsecondary Education and Employment Data Published by the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia (SCHEV)

Annual notice to enrolled high school students and their parents of (i) the availability of the post-secondary education and employment data published by SCHEV on its website pursuant to Section 23.1-204 of the Code of Virginia and (ii) the opportunity for such students to obtain a nationally recognized career readiness certificate at a local public high school, community college, or workforce center.
