everyone this is Byron Davis For Hopewell City Public Schools and I'm going to go ahead and unpack a pretty big question and here we go so CC Public Schools Beginning by reducing the director of balanced calendar and I'm going to answer the question today on Tangle Isabel encounter worth it which is a really big question to unpack and I could question so what's going to make sense of it so first of all new things can be scary and confusing we all know that we work with a couple different doctoral teams won the completed study in 2020 and other one you study in 2021 and they've helped us to kind of be able to communicate and make clear the value of what hope all is able to offer in what we're doing so we're going to look at that together now for most people coming over simplified way of looking at it which is just going to think well do the Sol scores go up which is the main measurement people are used to and how much does it cost and then they kind of just make a decision after that if they think it was worth it or not but there's a lot more going on than just that that's a surface-level stuff so when you kind of typical Iceberg analogy we just hit the Sol and coffees here but it all this other stuff so as an example one it seems that this study for us they serving the families in the community to be able see what they cared about and what they said was seventy-nine percent care about teacher quality 62% carrier 3/8 in in courses and programs 6 a person care about quality in classroom instruction and then only 80% actually cared about standardized test scores so those matter mistake cares about those Odyssey matter but that's not what our local neighborhoods focused on so it'll look turn to different we're just a moment ago there's still more though so let's try to make sense of all this different stuff where should I go from some cloudy thinking to clear Thinking by unpacking block of is it worth it the first let's review what is the ballot counter how to set up so here we can see a model of the 2324 instructional calendar and in from year to year they look similar and we have these different color days but ultimately there are 180 mandatory for canal days regardless of whether you're on a traditional calendar or a balanced calendar that doesn't change with we have was bouncing over there sick optional additional weeks of instructional opportunities called intercession those happen two in the fall is here doing the spring to the summer so horses are either one or two full two weeks long their offer pre-k through 12th grade four students are free of charge for a student and then we can register for a few or as many as you'd like there are a ton of unique and Innovative opportunities and I'll show you a few do people have to question this Wonder like $1 calendar work specifically year-round schools was traditionally referred to is that good is that bad and sound like no breaks what are the songs I mean I was just really what we found is there three different groups in the doctoral team when they study they said you got fairly equally distributed group of people who are for this people are against it and people who are unsure but what the running is that in here is the actual original breakdown of people who were in agreement with the balanced calendar and people who felt like he understood it but they've found it was it the more that people understood it the more they were for it. people understood the more they were against it so what we want to do if you want to help people understand it because we believe it and we think that the more that we have other people understand it the more they'll before 2 so this presentation to some degree is an effort in that me and making sure that people really understand a lot of stuff to understanding do 30 mini turbo is it worth it well they're kind of three things that there's the cost utility and enjoyment and we want to hit the sweet spot in the middle well, so I can tell you right now they cost about $800,000 per school year for us to implement Bells counter we estimated between 750000 and 1 million dollars in Aiken scale up or down depending on how many people participate but that's how many cost the question then is about utility and enjoyment and we believe there's a lot of utility get a lot of enjoyment what we do and so we want to share some of that too the way they're going to unpack all this there really is a lot one of the doctor all teams helped us by mapping this out with a theory of change so when we kind of talked through all of them things you're trying to do here's what they are if we redistribute the 180 instructional days at at 6 weeks of intercession expand hands on deep learning for all students invite hobo families and Community to participate in the palace calendar then we will reduce student learning lost do summer slide provide Equitable access to enrichment through intersections increase teacher to pass me for deeper learning by designing intercessions increase community and family Partnerships and provide more frequent breaks for Rejuvenation expose students to A diversity of experiences increase instructional time improve teacher joy and fun Richie teaching their passions play continuous Improvement and capacity-building communicate effectively and improve Community relationships we will achieve increase student academic achievement engagement and well-being increase teacher engagement and retention a parent and Community satisfaction engagement measured by increase academic achievement and Sol increased his attendance increase cool-climate decrease discipline referral increase it all being scores increase entrepreneur for our staff increase deeper learning documentation improvements instructional delivery increase parent support for a CPS increase intersession Community Partners and so all children will be academically and socially well in Hopewell students will grow into a civically engaged collaboratively of critical thinkers and communicators is a lot of good stuff but it's a lot so let's look under the hood and try to make sense of it one by one the first redistribute the 180 instructional days and add six weeks of intersection looks like you can see here with this visual balanced calendar is more balanced over the course of the Year between time that you're working or learning and time that you having off we're taking these other instructor opportunities well there are no guarantees that everybody will grow Progressive definitely want you but we do know that without stealing we can do nothing you don't have anything to work with so we need more time with students that's kind of what we're getting here and with the time of students we create opportunity so the yellow days on here again or six additional weeks or instruct Lamborghinis to in the fall to the spring to in the summer actually that part it's been Hands-On a learning for all students so instructions are meeting potatoes this is really where we have to put our energy and put our Focus because this is what education is about and sometimes you blow out a bad experience but it's really important to throw the baby out with the bathwater do you have a bad sandwich one place doesn't mean that you say well there should be no sandwich shops you can go down the street and go to a different place you can have different experiences different places and ultimately you can come that the places that are delivering in fine highest you change their model change their delivery and improved I know that but staying on the food analogy we have a whole bunch of different styles here this past food plus a fine dining new truck is not on the strip she going to have to cut in our design process we have to Custom Design in a way that meets the needs that our community have but the focus on our what is on quality so that's what we got to do how do we do that Hopewell we focus on his hands on deep learning so during his 12 to week-long interesting experiences teachers are able to hone in on our deeper learning instructional model by putting time and focus into a method of cross curricular project-based learning regular project-based learning that's important this allows the cost in deeply dive into subject matter with excursions and expert visits all classes work to develop a culminating project for performance but the vapors into the community at the end of the course here's an example over here or deep learning framework we have a few different parts of this this communication and collaboration is also critical thinking problem solving is also lying and put it all the pieces we have these different levels level 1 2 3 4 we're students and teachers are working their way through in our deeper learning model so this is what we determine really is where our value is and was important structurally and so this allows us to be able to put focus in the right place during recession okay invite Hoople families and Community to participate in the balance counter so then we can look at course options together and inside of children up for free opportunities to participate in what interest in whatever interests them and benefits them and we have a catalog with a lot of options so just had a quick example in a long presentation this is our interception course catalog has is a different thing but the main thing is to look at the intersection courses and then we go take a look at those we can see you can filter by which season you're talkin about school break for their 518 Court Street you're right now it was unique horses that are all very very different from one another and we're offering some really really cool experiences for kids that they really just otherwise probably a most recent wouldn't get sore. that we're proud we were able to offer here an additional teachers design courses they can reach out to businesses and form Partnerships in design and open and implementation so teachers are able to come up with an idea reach out to me prior to say hey I have an idea I'd like us to do this together and we sit down and talk figure out how we want to design this in a way that works for both of us and then once we figure that out and move forward with a course but I can go the other direction can also reach out to teachers they reach out to us through these forms in this one of the way they reach out to us they able to share when they would like to participate they can say if they would like to come to students were forced to succumb to them they can talk about what level of funding their comfortable with is it if any and then they can stay with Grace they want to work with so this really is a custom-designed were people able to Partners community members able to participate at a level that works for them more than anyone being over committed together we create energy when we're all working toward students so is it's a community participation event to make a difference for our students in this in this community and we do we make a difference you're just some pictures I mean really just a few pictures out of the time but you can see the variety and the things that were doing and this he speaks to a little bit of that we had the Lawrence in archery course has their dance course has their stuff with you know learn to play the harp there's a lot of really cool cooking course isn't healthy living forces and courses learning to swim it goes on and on and on and then there are things are incredibly out of the whole tree writing and creative writing and social justice I mean I can go on for a long time 518 different examples so moving on reduce student learning loss due to Summer slide through Johns Hopkins study that was conducted in this has helped us and you can see on April calendar students learn but then they request through the summer and it takes them a long time before they get back the same level that they were at whereas if they have the opportunity for continued study you just don't regress you have the opportunity for aggression so that's one of the differences that we're trying to make provide Equitable access to enrichment through intersections okay so OK Google access we want to make sure they're all of our students have this sort of opportunity honestly this is remediation for a problem where students that struggle academically are often forced into remedial trapped the intention as well meaning to help the students at their level so they can catch up that's important however you choose often end up in an English for me Nation cycle without opportunity or exposure to enrichment opportunities for me issues all the time trailer kill drilling kill and focus it is often drugs often kind of locks on proceeding Remini the joy of learning Ashland free diminishes and students do need to not only experience the joy of learning but they need to be exposed to experiences they otherwise would not have have and who will serve a low socio-economic Community where my family is just wood we have the opportunity and can't really afford to send their children off to Camp like experiences or tutoring experiences or whatever it might be so we're really able to offer lock you increase teacher capacity learning by designing intercession the teachers are the ones that are designing we're trying to increase their capacity for deep learning so again all the ingredients we can't have this we need this win a good quality ingredients in we're designing what we're doing so that we can get the satisfaction looking for so some of the things that we do or teachers are guided through a focus planning process that allows the creation of custom intersection courses there are a whole bunch of guys questions resources meeting some people that kind of help to fine-tune and make sure the course of that were designing are going to be successful and be effective with what we're trying to do and to that end we also kind of look at what are the needs that we have within our classroom grade school or School Division and then we try to we try to build and design or courses in a way that makes increase community and family Partnerships so for that one there if we can push it can't just be teachers and students when we work together and between teachers parents and Community Partners to support students that Synergy between teachers many partners and parents is a huge part of where we're adding value and making a difference for students Google has a bunch of Grady isn't going to break horses but we know there the rest of that pie or all the other ideas that I haven't even occurred to us we're Community Partners to be members may have some really amazing ideas that we haven't occurred to us and if we would just how to work together we could really expand what we're offering in the variety will be offering so that's a big piece of the value in the Community Partnership provide more frequent breaks for Rejuvenation we're chasing time you want to get more breaks when you have the rebalancing them in time for it so we give a lot of choice and opportunity for all these different levels here for students they have the option for free academic opportunities and Kam Plastics. there's also the opportunity to catch up or you can get ahead by filling academic apps for students and employees their the opportunity to take vacation that's the Rejuvenation part is also for employee opportunity for additional work for additional pay working me Parker's able to cool design forces to participate at their own Comfort level and our teachers have the opportunity for solo teaching or co-teaching and too few different levels as well they don't have to just keep it level a normal teeth so lots of operating loss of choice when we when we look at this and then of course part of that is the fact that we're creating the fuckability by having those two weeks in the fall two weeks in the spring two weeks in the summer we can actually do all those things with just additional calendar without intersection the rebalancing of the time I mention exposed to a diversity of experiences so she really said of short examples I want to talk about the middle schoolers that are dancing they haven't got this you think you probably wouldn't happen at home it was not for everybody so we are doing our best to try to make sure that the opportunity to provide or valuable ones that make a difference that are memorable experiences and the kids otherwise probably wouldn't have alright increase instructional time goes to time is money or dollars really buying time here so we should not put solar so short we need to take advantage of every minute that we have to be able to make a difference with those opportunities we have so we're getting more time through to some fall through some spring two weeks in the summer we also mirror a regular instructional day for Oliver schools both of them take advantage of the full amount of time that things are normally used to assess Crainer so short but also so that logistically we know that we can provide bussing Services food services Etc using our regular schedule improve teacher joy and fun through teaching him in their passions it's cuz I'm just one word ownership when you own what you're doing then you can design it in a way that you wasn't designing it it's kind of like when you getting in someone else's car and you're not able to adjust the seats or the mirrors or anything like that ownership is when you have a bit more control and you can influence how things are working so brother a top-down approach we've taken a bottle of proof Works teacher passions are married with student interest in a way work was there designed so that the people who are directly involved with them have that winter ship employee continuous Improvement and capacity-building so experimenting in the sandbox it really comes down to teachers especially but really everyone involved many partners parent student he will take a keto recipe or we want to do fun and exciting things and a lot of time on a decent guy during the regular school year with a pre sign curriculum and a day what subject areas was already kind of scripted it doesn't allow that same flexibility but hear this is an opportunity where we can bring the joy into instruction to fun things we were learning through but opportunities and then. the opportunity to learn through that and potentially even have that flew back into their regular school year teaching when they end up learning how they can take a structural approach to effectively get with her looking for through more interesting approach so that's that experimentation and Dicky and Ricky from rest make it effectively and improved Community relationships so can you park the more we work together the more our relationships are baked into the model and we're familiar comfortable and it becomes routine so that's kind of what that's all about we will achieve increase academic achievement engagement and well-being there are three big Concepts here academic achievement engagement and well-being so academic achievement that there's a lot to unpack there and of itself that's the aim of education so instruction wants to make sure there's academic achievement and these are all the types of things that we're working on trying to do to make sure that that is a chief shooting engagement we need her seems to be in to be able to learn think we're trying to teach them and we believe that our intercession courses do a wonderful job of engaging students there's the social emotional learning side of thing which is really really I think people are realizing how important is more more so we use something called The Castle model I'm so for social emotional learning he has these five competencies there's self-awareness self Richmond social awareness relationships go and responsible decision-making these are the type of things that kind of Make It or Break It For You in the workplace Make It or Break It For You in the educational setting you know how self aware are you killing yourself married do you have social awareness when you're interacting with others do you know how to build relationships with others you know how to make responsible decisions they matter in all these different environment and so we're trying to build that skill-set so that she's can be successful now and in the future increase teacher engagement and retention goes back to that same word ownership when they own it then that's where they have the ability to build their own to increase parent and Community satisfaction engagement there's a thread here so we start off with invite Hopewell family and Community to participate in the balanced calendar increase community and Family Partnership communicate effectively in a GroupMe really should increase pairing for me satisfaction and engagement so again same thing I was saying earlier when we have people engagement working together and we have a partnership that can make a difference to where the outcome for looking well here's what I think we should before going back to that earlier survey 79% really mature quality we can get we can offer that during our interception course has 52% variation courses in program obviously we're doing that quality classroom instruction do that standardized test scores we believe we can impact this through the other things that we're doing okay so through other means we've had we've also heard people say community members say they want to be prepared for life after the K-12 experience for College and Career Readiness, goes back to some of that SEL suppose song about as an example of one of many examples they want Safety and Security of children and they want children to enjoy the experience and build relationships the memories through their experiences they want what you need to participate in the process Partnerships grapes and they want strong some results from Kansas outcomes that are all things that we're striving to achieve how do we measure thumb so increase academic achievement as well as increased student attendance improve School climate decrease discipline referrals increase student well-being scores right with what other doctoral studies they helped us by try putting out a timeline to the doctoral study produced a series of timelines for evaluating the effectiveness of the counter near the formative stage the performer they were monitoring stage in the sun or shade the first year the three years where we focus on. engagement teacher and staff engagement a satisfaction which flows into an overlap with the first one to four years or plus years of intercession attendance at the assessment student engagement teacher and staff engagement pure satisfaction which flows two years for Plus student school year attendance at the roof and she even scores School climate survey teacher retention rates again we're looking to see the results or our attendance Brussels Griffon achievement our school climate our retention teacher retention rate at the four plus your mark once we have been able to really make a difference with the work that we're doing year per year so first you naked again she's meant that is measured with the state cresswell's engagement measure with the state for attendance rate while being measured with the state through climate and culture surveys and of course reducing disciplinary referrals will help with to be engaged to be able to get better score will help with their attendant will help with their well-being parent-teacher engagement retention that's contract getting teachers to renew the contract because of what we're doing is something they like him is working deeper learning making sure that we're getting the results were looking for as we work through that rubric instructional delivery making sure that we are getting the engagement that we're looking for and we're being affected with her uncle. increase parent support brace EPS increased intersection Community Partners we want to increase how much people are involved and that's not the regular talking about where the more it becomes the more of that we've got people and we're just adding and adding as we build a true deep Community this working together the village serving children so that finally leaves us to that last statement this will grow a civically engaged collaborative 380 critical thinkers and communicators we believe that this is something that about calendar helps to be able to achieve we believe that we're able to offer a lot of value through an important we believe this we're able to work towards this goal through all those things that I just unpacked them through your change through the balanced calendar and nurses and we hope that other people understand that so they can join us by participating by things to mess up by being Community Partners by being cage with what we're doing so that we can all make a
