Black History Month
Today, is the first day of Black History Month, a celebration of achievements by Black Americans and other peoples of African descent. Black History Month was catalyzed by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, whom our own middle school is named in honor of.
In 1915 Dr. Woodson and prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland founded what is now known as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). In 1926, the ASALH piloted National Negro History week, choosing the second week of February to coincide with the birthday of Frederick Douglass.
This event inspired celebrations nationwide, which over the years blossomed into the Black History Month many schools and communities commemorate today.
